Whilst purusing my usual news sources, I came across a very interesting and thorough piece on honey bees and pesticide use. The article can be seen here. The article comes from The Daily Green, which I must admit rarely has pieces on there with any true scientific information. But the site is informative for those not already in the “know” or who do not care for scientific reasoning behind why things are. However, I greatly enjoy knowing the science behind things and being in the ”know”. Unless I know the science behind why something is the way it is, I don’t feel as though I really know the topic at all. But besides that fact that The Daily Green often has poor writing, not very “green” recipes etc. etc., this article on honey bees is a great exception. The article was written by the editor of Bee Culture magazine (who ever knew there was such a magazine!?!?!), so I’m thinking the guy just might know his bees!
I wanted to share the article with everyone for a few reasons. For one, not eating honey is often an “on the fence” issue for vegans, many seeing no point in not consuming it. This article will inform you of the amount of pesticides that accumulate in bees and their honey. Two, if honey bees continue to die, all of our crops are in jeopardy: organic or non-organic. Three, bees greatly affect our livelihood, even if we do not care to notice and I think bees should be paid some much needed attention! Where the heck is Bee Week, huh Discovery Channel!?!?
Random tidbit: I’m actually allergic to bees. Guess I really do have a soft spot for all creatures on earth…well, humans are still iffy on the “soft spot” scale!!
