Oh The Stupidity!

Hello everyone! First of all, I’d like to announce that apparently my cupcake SUCKS cause I am losing pitifully. But oh well, at least I have cupcakes!!

I would LOVE to share this gem I received in my comments today….oh, it is quite fun-filled. Hope you get a good laugh from it as I did! ;) Apparently this is from someone who calls himself “NotADumbassWhoBelievesEverythingHeReads”. Oh yeah, it gets better! Now you knew from that name that he just HAD to be an idiot, but let him prove that himself!

Christ people. Meat is good for the body. Long before PETA has brainwashed the dumbass people that follow the Vegan bible man has consumed meat, whether it was fed straight manure or straight grass. And on the topic of what the cows eat, tests of meat have shown how much protein, vitamins and minerals are in the meat, so as far as your “12 years of biological science higher education” goes, suck a dick, the burgers, steak, and chicken I eat DAILY provide me with what I need. Do you really think the cows gave a damn about where their food came from? If they were being fed the meat from aborted babies, assuming they liked the taste, they’d refuse to eat? I really doubt that. Yeah, we’re smarter than they are and we’re at the top of the food chain, that doesn’t make you right, in fact that makes you silly vegans wrong. We’re (and I really mean the people who eat what they want to eat) able to feed these cows what we feed them because they’re willing to eat it and from what I’ve heard from the cows, no complaints have been made. You people make me sad for the human race because of how wrong you are and how right you think you are. You chew on your asparagus and broccoli and other crap you choose to eat because you refuse to think for yourself, I’ll buy double the meat to take your place and throw what I don’t eat in the trash. You people make me sad for humanity because of the stupid you spread. I’m living a life full of good tasting food though, with all the essentials the body needs from meat. So you do you and I will laugh at you simple bitches every time your pompous ass laughs at the lifestyle that has worked for hundreds of years. Dipshits.

Okay, I will let you absorb that comment for a bit. Take all the time you need! I actually was somewhat happy to receive this comment…hell, I was a little iffy on what to write about tonight but this gave me the perfect topic! Idiots! Yay! The never-ending topic that always brings me such agonizing joy to complain about. Now lets go through this, shall we? Side note: this was a comment left on my Cows Fed Junk Food piece.

Christ people. Meat is good for the body. Long before PETA has brainwashed the dumbass people that follow the Vegan bible man has consumed meat, whether it was fed straight manure or straight grass.

First of all, even a great number of doctors are finally coming to the conclusion that meat is BAD for the body. How else would you explain the tremendous rate of high cholesterol, heart ailments, heart attacks, obesity etc etc.? And how would you explain that these ailments only generally arise in a “western” style diet? Asian countries who are becoming more “western” in diet or wealthy (and therefore able to afford meats etc., depending on how you wish to look at it) are finding their rates of these ailments increasing drastically. They have gone from nearly no such ailments in their societies to great numbers suffering from them. Oh, that must be from the tomato and lettuce ON the burger. Damn tomatoes, screwing all of us up! Second of all, I am anything BUT brainwashed. If anyone is brainwashed it is this fool who continues to swallow every ounce of propaganda given to him by the government and meat and dairy industries. Also, I don’t adhere to ANY bible. I personally don’t believe in the bible one iota. But that is another topic altogether. As for PETA, I don’t get much, if any, of my information from PETA actually. I find that I don’t often agree with PETA, but I do find it is a good source of information for people just starting to explore animal rights.

on the topic of what the cows eat, tests of meat have shown how much protein, vitamins and minerals are in the meat

Hmm, how does this make my junk food point invalid in any way? Was there supposed to be a test showing the level of chocolate in their system? Because I really doubt they would go through the trouble of testing the meat for every iota of nutritional information since they won’t even test every cow for Mad Cow Disease (and other diseases). Hell, they don’t even test 5%, if even 1%.

the burgers, steak, and chicken I eat DAILY provide me with what I need.

Oh yes, and the artery clogging that is occurring DAILY brings me great joy. Here’s to your heart attack! May you enjoy it as much as your burgers :)

Ouch, he is trying to get Pro-lifers involved too! Wow, attacking vegans and pro-lifers (I’m sure some are one in the same). Sorry for the graphic image people, hope you weren’t eating lunch! Hmm, I dare say the mother of this uneducated, brainwashed idiot should have given a second thought to having him. Moving on though. Let’s see, do I care where my food comes from? Yes. Does a cow care where it comes from? Well I suppose a cow wouldn’t necessarily care where it came from, but I have a pretty good idea it would care WHAT it was. Cows are not scavengers, they do not eat anything and everything. They have preferences involving their diet (and their lives), or else they would be just like a vulture. So no, cows wouldn’t care where their GRASS came from, but they sure as hell probably care why they are forced to eat CHOCOLATE. Guaranteed: if a cow had a choice between fresh grass and ethanol waste, he is choosing the grass.

Yay for silly vegans and their long, silly, healthy lives! Oh and there are plenty of people who are far less intelligent that any cow you could find me. FAR LESS INTELLIGENT.

We’re (and I really mean the people who eat what they want to eat) able to feed these cows what we feed them because they’re willing to eat it and from what I’ve heard from the cows, no complaints have been made.

Wow, all this time I have been forced at gunpoint to eat my veggies! Holy crap, I must have been forced to make it too! Damn, someone really has some control over me. Oh if only I could think for myself. IF ONLY!

Hey, this guy can talk to cows! Holy crap, I’m in awe of his cow communication. He must communicate with one just about at his level too or else I’m sure he would have heard SOME sort of complaint. At the very least in the realm of “please don’t slaughter me”. Hmm, maybe I have had it wrong all this time. Wow, he really has opened my eyes. Cows speaking English (I assume it isn’t Russian or Spanish since this guy communicates in English), what will do next?

Cows Can Speak English!!

Cows Can Speak English!!

Dipshits.

Such sweet parting words, brings a tear to my eye. *sniffle* I think I am in love! A cow whisperer and poet to boot! Oh, be still my heart!

Where to begin…WHERE to begin.

It really is funny that we “people” make him sad for the human race. Funny because I find that people who have their heads stuck up their asses are the ones who are ruining the human race. Especially when they reproduce and spread the bigotry, stupidity and overall angry traits. Did you happen to notice that all of a sudden I CHOOSE to eat what I do? Wow, what a transition. I just had a gun pointed at my head a minute ago too. Phew, glad that is over!

How exactly is it that I do not (and others who are vegan) think for myself? Would the LOGICAL situation not be that those who are following the STANDARD diet are the ones not thinking for themselves? Those who are doing just as the meat and dairy companies are wanting them to do, they are the ones NOT thinking for themselves. Since only less than 1% of the United States’ population is vegan, and only about 1-2% are vegetarian, that leaves…ooooh over 97% of Americans following the standard meat, dairy then maybe some veggies diet. Wow, somehow the less than 1% are so strong and powerful that they can brainwash me to eat what they eat! Wait, did they also force me to read books, go to school and to love animals? OMG, they had me since birth. Those bastards and their mass of media outlets constantly bombarding me with images of what I should be eating. Oh please, make the billboards, neon signs and commercials dictating that I am to eat at a vegan restaurant go away! I can’t take all the veggie burger advertisements any more! Wait a minute, they never advertise for veggie burgers on television. I’ve also never seen a billboard saying where the next exit for a vegan restaurant was. Holy crap, I have seen such a thing for McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC and the like though. OMG, could the cow whisperer be wrong? Could the meat eaters actually be the brainwashed ones? Thank my vegan bible, it is true!

My guess: this person is not very well educated, has at the very least his head up his ass, is a bigot, is a bachelor, doesn’t believe in global warming and loves fast food. What age are you giving him? Since I don’t know his age now, I am going to guess a heart attack at the ripe ol’ age of 45. Hopefully he won’t have reproduced by then.

Oh, and Mr. Dumbass, all comments of yours will be dismissed, so don’t even bother.

Veganism and Animal Rights Vilified Yet Again

It seems as though people have found a new target to focus their aggressions on: vegans and/or animal rights supporters. Not only that, but these individuals have begun writing anti-animal rights books. Their “reasons” to vilify our beliefs are proposterous and unwarranted. Apparently believing in the lives of animals makes us inconceiveably evil and elite. How dare we think of others! The irony of this is that true animal rights supporters will just become more vigilant in the face of these people and perhaps even change their opinion of the human species.

What on earth am I talking about? I’m talking about this article on the National Review Online (*ahem* screams right-wing) by an idiot by the name of Wesley J. Smith. It appears that Smith doesn’t like vegans and animal rights supporters. His main reason for writing this article seems to be various antics of PETA. Did you know that PETA was the one and only animal rights group? Did you also know that they represented all of our beliefs? No? Well good thing Smith came along to help us realize this!

The driving foundation of this article is the response of PETA regarding Jessica Simpson wearing a t-shirt declaring that upstanding females consume the flesh of others. PETA’s response, which was unnecessary considering who is taking dietary advice from the likes of Jessica Simpson, was the usual meat consumption causes death and anguish declaration. True indeed, but yet another move by PETA that allows twits like Wesley J. Smith to accost our belief system.

It appears that those in the vegan and animal rights community are “hold(ing) a weak intellectual hand” when it comes to debating the issue of “meat is murder”. Did you know this? Because this was all news to me. It appears that we are not actually vegans in the true sense, since mice, rabbits, birds, snakes and other small creatures are killed by the cultivation of the land. It is true that those poor little guys probably do get killed by farm equipment daily, and for that I am sorry. But how is this fact a reason to attack vegans? Since we consume only vegetables, grains, fruits etc., we are apparently responsible for each and every death that occurs on the farms. Or at the very least we cannot claim we are eating a murder-free diet. But is that really true?

I see it this way: those in opposition to us have so little in their favor in terms of evidence for maintaining their heart-clogging, global warming enhancing, death mongering lifestyle that they now need to vilify us to make themselves feel better. It is becoming ever-more alarming how similar war mongers are to meat mongers. What’s that? Yes, you’re right. Most vegans probably do come from the left-wingers side. Good catch! (Oh but this is a whole ‘nother story indeed!)

So let me just break down the article of this special consultant to the Center of Bioethics and Culture (that gave me a good laugh).

Nor can they argue that field animals experience less-agonizing deaths from plant agriculture than food animals do from food-animal slaughtering. Field animals may flee in panic as the great rumbling harvest combines approach, only to be shredded to bits within their merciless blades; they may be burned to death when field leavings are burned; they may be poisoned by pesticides; they may die from predation when their plant cover has been removed.

Really? Are “food-animals” allowed the option to flee? Are they allowed the option to live in this field or that one? Are they allowed the option to eat what they want instead of being force-fed antibiotics and remains of their former relatives? I think not. I am sure that many animals do die in the harvesting process of modern-day grain etc. farming. But, Smith seems to deliver us a terrible image of animal after animal being killed by farm equipment at every turn. First of all, has this guy ever seen a farm actually harvested? Farm equipment doesn’t exactly move 90 MPH. On the other hand, have you seen a rabbit run? I’m quite certain that most animals that enter the fields leave the fields alive (except if captured by predator species). This cannot be said for any farm animal grown for food (except for those lucky few that are rescued by farm sanctuaries!). Have you ever known a mouse to NOT be afraid of a human nonetheless a gigantic machine? Most of the animals listed on Smith’s article are either skiddish by nature or very quick. In no way am I saying NO animal ever dies from the likes of farm equipment, I just suspect it is much lower than individuals on Smith’s side contend. Also, do animals no longer have the capability to smell? Do they not realize to run when a huge fire ball is headed their way? Generally animals killed in fire deaths are surrounded by fire with no escape. This would not often be the case in controlled burns on farms. Poisoned by pesticides? People poison animals in their homes and call it “pest control”, when are those people going to be attacked? Plus, humans are be continually poisoned by pesticides daily…its just a much slower process that is supported by pesticide companies and non-organic farmers. Lastly, animals dying from predation is the least of any animals problems these days. At least predation is a natural norm and necessary for a healthy ecosystem. Did anyone care to consider all the animals and entire species being wiped out by global warming (which factory farming of animals is the #1 contributor to)? Also, does it even matter to such people as this that most grain, soybeans etc. are raised for livestock feed? Eh? I feel absurd for even validating these reasons of Smith’s by repeating them here, but I wanted everyone to see the stupidity!

Moreover, even if the relative number of animals killed were the morally decisive issue, veganism might not be the most ethical solution. In 2001, S. L. Davis of the Department of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University, Corvallis, wrote a paper claiming that the diet most likely to result in the deaths of the fewest animals would be beef, lamb, and dairy — not vegan. Davis found a study that measured mouse population density per hectare in grain fields both before and after harvest and estimated a harvest casualty rate of ten mice per hectare. Then, he multiplied that figure by 120 million hectares of farmland in the U.S.; meaning that 1.2 billion mice would die each year in food production if America became a wholly vegan country.

Oh the insanity continues! First of all, S.L. Davis is an ass. I am officially ashamed of Oregon State University. I am increasingly disturbed by these individuals in the academic community, frequently in the animal sciences/biology departments completely vilifying animal rights and animals in general. I was under the impression that academia was supposed to be better informed and wise. All this makes me wonder how my former professors stand on these issues. I may be horrified to know! But I digress! Davis’ paper is ridiculous, plain and simple. First off, he is assuming that dietary habits regarding beef, lamb and dairy would stay exactly the same if people in this country no longer ate chicken, turkey and pork. Really? No one would eat more beef or lamb or milk or cheese? Wow. What a omnivorian utopia. Consider the more likely scenario: no chicken, turkey or pork would raise the consumption of beef etc. drastically, thereby completely negating Davis’ thesis. Second, if we are all supposed to be omnivorian, based on this paper, wouldn’t the very idea of current vegans and vegetarians now eating beef, lamb and dairy cause an increase as well? Wonder why Davis’ chose to just make it a beef, lamb and dairy diet? Because chickens would have thrown a gigantic loop into his logic, since more chickens are killed than the concocted number of mice in his theory. Secondly, his estimations regarding population density are fairy invalid as well. He does not take into account that the field equipment may have scared away individuals, natural predation and general mouse lifespan. But don’t take my word for it, here are the ridiculous notions straight from Davis”:

Accurate numbers of mortality aren’t available, but Tew and Macdonald (1993) reported that wood mouse population density in cereal fields dropped from 25/ha preharvest to less than 5/ha postharvest. This decrease was attributed to migration out of the field and to mortality. Therefore, it may be reasonable to estimate mortality of 10 animals/ha in conventional corn and soybean production.

So just for the hell of it, lets assume half of the missing mice are dead from human activity–even though we have no actual mortality numbers available and no decent former studies to prove it. Yeah, good science Davis’, you should be up for an award. And with this blatant assumption game on Davis’ part, anti-vegans/animal rights individuals are finding ammunition. Oh, their reasonings are flawless!!

Also from Davis’:

According to the USDA numbers quoted {…}, of the 8.4 billion animals killed each year for food in the US, 8 billion of those are poultry and only 41 million are ruminants (cows, calves, sheep, lambs). Even if the numbers of ruminants killed for food each year doubled to replace the 8 billion poultry, the total number of animals that would need to be killed under this alternative would still be fewer than in the vegan alternative.

I suppose that answers my previous statement regarding increase of beef etc. consumption, but double? So this country will go from consuming 8 BILLION chickens and 41 MILLION ruminants, to ONLY consuming at most 82 MILLION ruminants? Really? What on earth will all those flesh craving individuals do with 7.96 BILLION less creatures to eat? Seriously? The idea of only doubling is proposterous!!!

Further brilliancy from Smith:

Contending that meat eating is somehow murder while veganism is morally pristine because it doesn’t result in intentional animal deaths is factually false and self-delusional. No matter your diet, animals surely died that you might live.

I cannot believe oxygen is being wasted on idiots like this. How are vegans simply “contending” that meat is murder? Are animals NOT in fact raised for the sole reason of being killed for consumption? Isn’t intentional killing in fact murder? Did I miss something during my time on earth?? If us vegans are not “morally pristine” I would like to know what strict omnivores or carnivores are then. Morally vacant perhaps? I know two people who are morally vacant *ahem*.

Agave Mustard Marinade For Tofu or Tempeh

My boyfriend Matt loves, LOVES, honey mustard anything. Period. Which, as we all know, is an issue for vegans. Honey does not sit well with us. So I made a point of creating honey mustard-esque dressings quite awhile ago to help him in his transition to veganism. I don’t know if honey mustard would have been the make it or break it point, but it sure wasn’t working in veganism’s favor that he couldn’t consume it! So, I came up with an awesome salad dressing using agave nectar. Needless to say, his veganism transformation went smoothly there on out (yeah, I’m fooling myself but still ;) ). Eventually the salad dressing led me to create a marinade for tofu, which I later tried on tempeh. I personally think the marinade is even better on tofu than tempeh, but I know there are those out there that feel queasy at the mention of tofu (not to mention any names….Sara and Jo….oops it slipped out, sorry :) ). So rest assured this marinade works well for tempeh as well!

Agave Mustard Marinade

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup water

3 Tbsp mustard (any kind will do, I prefer spicy brown mustard)

1 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce

3 Tbsp agave nectar

1 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp pepper

Firm (not silken) Tofu or a package of Tempeh

Whisk all ingredients together in the dish you will be marinating in. If you are using tempeh, be sure to cut into the size chunks you desire and boil in water for 10-15 minutes (helps in the digestion of the tempeh, I do this step every time I use tempeh–I also find it gives it a better flavor). Then just drain the water, let tempeh cool slightly and place in marinade. Regardless of whether it is tofu or tempeh, I always place the dish in the fridge.

**If you are only using HALF of an 8oz package of tempeh, then you only need half the marinade recipe. Obviously if you are using an entire 8oz package use the entire marinade recipe.

**If you are going to be using a FULL package of tofu (generally a pound), I recommend using a dish larger than 8×8. I find that when I use an 8×8 dish to marinade it only fits a half of a pound nicely. Plan accordingly!

I always freeze my tofu once I get home from the store (I freeze in it’s package), so I simply take out a package the night before I’m using it. It takes on a slightly spongy texture that readily absorbs marinade and has a nice texture when you’re eating it. Remember to press the tofu before placing in the marinade, otherwise the water will take the space for the marinade and it won’t absorb much, if any, marinade! I would recommend at LEAST 30 minutes of marinade time. I prefer 1-2 hours. You can always marinade overnight as well, but remember to plan ahead and remove tofu from the freezer if you freeze your tofu.

**I recommend flipping the tofu/tempeh halfway through the marinading time.

Since tempeh does not readily absorb marinade as well, I would recommend a longer marinade time. Overnight would be best but at least 2 hours would do.

After your tofu or tempeh is done marinating, you can bake it in the oven or “fry” it in a small amount of olive oil on the stove. I prefer to bake both the tofu and tempeh. If you fry in a small amount of oil, just cook until brown on both sides.

Bake at 350 Degrees F for a total of about 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet or with a silicon mat on the baking sheet. After 10 minutes in the oven, flip the tofu/tempeh over.

Baked Agave Mustard Tofu

Baked Agave Mustard Tofu

I like to serve the tofu or tempeh when I make wraps. I just cut up some veggies (generally carrots, onion, peppers, lettuce and spinach) and use an agave mustard dressing for dipping or for in the wrap itself (as Matt prefers). I actually like just a little Vegenaise in my wrap with all the veggies and tofu. Yummy!! It’s a very quick meal since nothing is cooked except for the tofu/tempeh. If you plan ahead and have the marinade ready before you go to work or school, all you will have to do is throw the tofu/tempeh in the oven while you prep veggies! I love this meal for summer months due to the minimal cooking and tons of fresh veggies!

Brillante Award, Quote Disappearances & Lack of New Entries

Hi everyone! First off it appears that I have some apologizing to do. Some who know me best might just claim apologizing is a difficult thing for me to do….and a very rare thing for me to do. You see, I’m almost never wrong, hello! ;) Well that aside, I must apologize for the annoyance and/or disgruntlement that I have potentially caused with the posting of the “Brillante Award“. According to others, this award is in fact a fake and was originally intended to be a chain letter of sorts. The information regarding the hoax can be seen here.

Personally, my brain never quite wrapped around the idea of an award being passed along, especially not with the odd number of 7 nominees being required. But, I thought it was awesome to be thought so highly of by a dear fellow blogger (Innocent Primate) and that was what mattered most to me. Sure it was difficult for me to choose 7 people to nominate, but I chose them carefully. I felt that nominating these individual blogs was my personal endorsement of that blog, and I was not going to take that half heartily! I understand that some individuals have become upset by this “hoax” but I truly hold no ill-will towards it. I see this whole situation as merely opening up my eyes to many many different blogs that I did not even know existed! Hopefully, whether the chain letter award upset you or not, you have discovered a new blog or two to read. Afterall, there truly was no harm done, at least not in the vegan blog world (I cannot account for other blog “worlds”) other than everyone’s expansion of reading material–how hurtful could that be?? Well if you dislike reading, recipes, blogs or veganism I’m sure it would be just downright awful. But serves you right for not liking those things! Jeez! :)

On for further apologies! *sigh* This is painful…oh so painful! Turns out that my idea of saving numerous quotes for wordpress to automatically post at a time I specified did not work. Perhaps it is my lack of the inner workings of the wordpress gods but the multiple quotes all raring to go for everyone have yet to see “daylight”. I’m working on what the problem is and will hopefully be posting a brand spankin’ new quote right after this apology session. Yes, I’m calling this an apology session now….I’ll take it as some much needed therapy and move on! Never to apologize again! Maybe….

Why no new posts? It was the weekend afterall! How busy could one be? Slacker! Say what you will, but I was either busy, avoiding being home due to obnoxious/loud neighbors or just plain tired from the heat! But hopefully I will be bringing many new recipes, photos, ideas etc etc to you soon. The posts will include such goodies as: Watermelon Sorbet review, Double-Chocolate Ice cream review, Agave Mustard Tofu, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Homemade Ice Cream…..oh I have you drooling now!! ;) Many more ideas wandering around in my head as well….we perhaps shall learn of them together :) Oh and I will FINALLY do my About page at some point as well!

I cannot wait to share with everyone my boyfriend and I’s ceramic fun we had over the weekend! We went to a paint your own ceramics place here in Denver and had a blast! We are currently waiting for the items to be fired by the store but next weekend we will have such goodies as: dog treat canister, multiple hot plates and a serving bowl for football parties (its a football!). I will have photos galore during the weekend for these pieces of art but I did want to share the adorable concept my boyfriend came up with! He decided to make a hot plate for me and he put a cow on it (adorable!). He then proceeded to write Besse (the cow apparently lol) *heart* (surrounding the cow) Vegans! Freakin’ adorable! Can’t wait to show you! I also painted a hot place on which I drew a rooster, pig, dog and a cat. I then proceeded to put my own quote: “So similar yet treated so differently. Why?” I would have made it more profound but I only had so much room! We then went paddle boating sunday afternoon, so my weekend was jam packed!

Again…I’m SORRY SORRY SORRY. Hey, take the sorrys while you can get them I say ;)

P.S. I find it is almost worth it to bring myself to apologize just so I could use that adorable little “sorry puppy”!!! ;)

Vegan Inspiration

I have found that males in general are the hardest to convince to convert to or accept a vegan diet. Do not get me wrong, I know there are many vegans that are male and I in fact know a few. But, when you first tell people you are vegan, who are the people to react the strongest? Males, generally. It probably has something to do with their provider vs nurturer upbringing, or their hunter vs gatherer mentality. Whether we like to admit it or not in today’s day and age, underneath it all most people still have hunter vs gatherer mentalities. Who here has not met a man who thought women should not work? Who has not met a woman who expects her man to bring home the bacon (preferably faux!). I personally do not agree with the separation of sexes; men are the “strong” ones and women are the “sensitive” ones. I think this is a little old fashioned, and surprisingly it even stretches to our dinner plate.

Men love their grills…covered in dead carcases of one creature or the next. The idea of having a tempeh burger on the grill not only perplexes them but horrifies them. How does one convert a man such as this? Vegan inspiration is what they need. Simply telling them the horrors of slaughterhouses may not be enough. Chicks getting their beaks cut off may not do it either….but what if Dirty Harry or the Man With No Name were to be VEGAN? Yes, in fact, CLINT EASTWOOD is VEGAN! *gasp* Not possible? Possible! What man has not quoted Dirty Harry or proclaimed the awesomeness of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?? Sure, there will be those that swear off Clint for life for the atrocity that is veganism, but perhaps some guys (even yours) will think “hey, Eastwood can do it, so can I”. Afterall, technically he would then have a true comparison between himself and Dirty Harry. So if moral reasoning doesn’t work, try the Eastwood reasoning. Think you might get lucky and convert your guy?  Well, do you? “Do you feel lucky? Do you punk?”

The Dinner Plate Disconnect

I occasionally watch the TLC show Jon & Kate Plus 8. Why I watch the show at all even perplexes myself as I am not one to oo and aah over children and in fact I do not want any of my own. Then add to that the fact that these children came from fertility treatment, which I am against since there are so many children in this world needing homes already, and it becomes ever so much more perplexing! I was ever so intrigured while watching an older episode when the family headed to an organic farm about an hour from them. I believe the name of the farm was Natural Acres Farm, but don’t quote me on that!

While the family was at the farm they were able to feed chickens, see cows and calves and horses. I was fairly surprised to see that the chickens were able to be running around in fairly open pastures, however the conditions inside the barn were not shown on camera. As a vegan I am always skeptical…… Whether the chickens were in open pastures or crowded in the barn(s) I am in no way legitimizing the eating of chickens. My main drive to write this blog about the show was the way the family acted with the cows and calves. They were very excited and thought the calves were absolutely adorable. Kate especially found the calves endearing and couldn’t get over how cute they were. Yes, I certainly agree that the cows/calves/chickens/horses and so on were absolutely adorable, its one of a plethora of reasons I do not consume them! However, the events that followed the family visiting the animals is what alarmed me so much.

Before the family was set to leave to head back to their home, they stopped at the shop at the farm to buy organic foods and get this, half of a cow. Yes, I said half of a cow. Even in the summary of the show it stated that Jon and Kate buy half a cow. Mind you it wasn’t a deal to have half ownership of a cow with someone else, no no no. This was in fact Jon and Kate purchasing box after box of organic beef from the farmer. This is where they lost me. How, after seeing the cows and calves in the fields and ooing and awing them, can you turn around not more than a few hours later, and buy one of the cows’ dead and mutilated cousin/brother/sister/mother/father etc?!?!!?!?! This epitomizes the disconnect most people have between their food and the animals it comes from. Sure, its quite possible that Jon and Kate see it for what its worth and do not mind, but it seems that in more cases than not that most people just don’t see a baby cow and think “oh thats beef”. I guarantee if the children knew they would not wish to eat the beef after visiting with the cows. It seems as though children are much more in tune with nature than we as adults are. Perhaps it is the lack of stress or knowledge of all the pressures of this world that make them able to possess closeness to nature.

All I know for sure is that in the moment that Kate paid for “half a cow” I saw glaring in my face a majority of the world’s disconnect between what is on the dinner plate and how it got there.

Quote Of The Day Or Week….You Can Pick

This is a quote that a friend of mine uses as her email signature. I think it is just a truly beautiful quote that shows much depth! Enjoy!

“But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh, we deprive a soul of the sun and light and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy.”
